Shopify App Store Statistics 2027: Apps, Developers, Installs and Themes

Last updated: November 6, 2026. Data from Store Leads and RevenueHunt.

The app ecosystem is Shopify's biggest strength and a common source of slow stores

More than 32,000 published apps mean almost any feature a brand needs already exists. That is a large part of why brands move to Shopify. The same abundance creates a problem we find in nearly every store we audit: apps get installed to solve one problem, stay installed long after, and each one adds scripts, fees and maintenance. The numbers below show the size of the ecosystem and which apps dominate, and the rest of the page explains how to get the benefit without the slowdown.

Store Leads detects only a subset of app installs, so real usage is higher for some apps. Sources: Store Leads, Shopify report (updated Oct 30, 2026); Store Leads, Most Installed Shopify Apps.

What this means for your store: Reviews and email are the most installed categories because they directly drive conversion and retention. They are also among the heaviest on the storefront, so choosing and configuring them well matters more than adding another one.

Debut, a legacy vintage theme, still runs on 113,447 stores, a sign of how many stores have not moved to Online Store 2.0 themes. Source: Store Leads, Shopify report (updated Oct 30, 2026).

What this means for your store: More than 100,000 stores still run Debut, a vintage theme without Online Store 2.0 sections. If your store is one of them, you are paying in speed, flexibility and developer time for a theme Shopify no longer develops. A theme rebuild is often the highest return project a mature Shopify store can run.

Why app count matters for performance

Every app that injects storefront scripts competes with the page for loading time. Shopify's platform sets a strong baseline (76% of mobile Shopify origins pass all Core Web Vitals, according to the HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2025, Ecommerce chapter), so slow Shopify stores are usually slowed down by apps, scripts and theme code rather than by the platform. Auditing installed apps is one of the first steps in our performance work.

Migrating is the best moment to clean up your stack

When a brand moves to Shopify, it gets to choose its app stack from scratch. Brands that replicate every plugin from their old platform recreate the same slowdown on a faster platform. Brands that start from requirements, use native Shopify features first and add apps only where needed launch faster stores with lower monthly fees. We build that decision into every migration, and into performance audits for stores already on Shopify.

Frequently asked questions

How many apps should a Shopify store have?

There is no right number. What matters is how many inject scripts into the storefront and whether each one earns its cost. Many apps run only in the admin and have no effect on speed.

Do Shopify apps slow down my store?

Apps that load storefront scripts can, especially reviews, popups, chat and tracking apps. Uninstalled apps can also leave code behind in the theme.

Should I replace apps with custom code?

Only when an app is slow, expensive at your volume or does far more than you need. Custom code removes the app fee but adds maintenance, so the decision should be case by case.

Methodology and how to cite this page

Every figure on this page comes from the public source linked next to it, checked on November 6, 2026. Store counts from Store Leads measure live, detected storefronts, not merchant accounts, so they differ from figures Shopify reports. W3Techs percentages describe the share of websites, not revenue. Percentages marked "calculated" are Shugert calculations from the cited raw numbers. Published app totals include apps that may since have been removed from the App Store, which is why they exceed live-app snapshots. We update this page every quarter. If you use these statistics, please cite and link to this page as the source of the compilation.

Too many apps slowing your store?

We audit app and script overhead and decide what to keep, replace or remove. Read our app impact guide or request a performance review.
