Avalara vs TaxJar for Shopify: Integration, Filing and Cost
A technical comparison of Avalara and TaxJar for Shopify merchants: tax calculation, filing workflows, data reconciliation, ERP integration and implementation risk.
Choosing between Avalara and TaxJar is not simply a question of which application calculates sales tax more accurately. For a Shopify merchant, the difficult work often happens where Shopify orders, product tax classifications, financial systems, exemption records and tax filings meet. This guide focuses on those integration decisions rather than offering tax advice.
Quick answer: which is a better fit?
TaxJar is worth evaluating when your primary requirement is U.S. sales-tax reporting and filings, you have a relatively straightforward technology stack, and you want to compare predictable order-volume tiers. Avalara is worth evaluating when your operations involve complex product taxability, exemption handling, multiple commerce or ERP systems, or broader jurisdictional needs. Neither is automatically the right tax engine for every Shopify store.
Before choosing either, compare them with Shopify Tax, which may already cover your calculation requirements. Shopify supports selecting a tax service and offers an Avalara Tax Compliance integration; the implementation path depends on the location and configuration of your store.
Comparison: what matters during implementation
| Decision area | TaxJar | Avalara | What to validate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical scope | U.S. sales-tax workflows | Broad tax-determination and compliance workflows | Countries, states, entities and channels supported in your contract |
| Shopify integration | Confirm the current supported integration and calculation approach | Shopify documents the Avalara Tax Compliance app | Which system actually calculates tax at checkout? |
| ERP and accounting | Check your specific connector or API path | Evaluate the appropriate ERP and order-management integration | Refunds, adjustments and reconciliation between systems |
| Returns and filing | Filing and automation options depend on plan | Filing products and service scopes vary | States covered, credits, deadlines and service responsibilities |
| Exemptions | Validate certificate needs against available features | Evaluate product and customer exemption workflows | Certificate expiration, audit trails and B2B treatment |
The Shopify implementation questions vendors should answer
1. Which system is the source of truth?
Map the order lifecycle from checkout to payment capture, fulfillment, refunds and tax reporting. If Shopify calculates the original order and an ERP later recalculates it, mismatched tax amounts can accumulate. Agree on whether tax comes from Shopify Tax, a third-party provider or another system before building integrations.
2. How are shipping, discounts and refunds represented?
Test product-specific tax treatment, shipping charges, discount allocations, returns and partial refunds. Compare the resulting Shopify transactions with the records used for tax reporting and filing. Do not assume a connector handles all adjustments automatically.
3. What happens with B2B exemptions?
Wholesale merchants should test tax-exempt customers, resale documentation and certificate review with realistic customer records. Also define who owns decisions about registration, exemption acceptance and compliance: these are legal and accounting responsibilities, not a theme customization task.
4. What if orders come from multiple channels?
Validate how Amazon, retail POS, wholesale orders and marketplaces enter the reporting workflow. Marketplace-facilitator treatment and tax collected elsewhere can affect reporting. The objective is one reconciled view, not duplicate remittance.
Pricing: avoid comparing outdated entry prices
TaxJar's published pricing is based on plan and order volume, and its support documentation lists a Starter tier of $39/month for 200 orders and a Professional tier of $99/month for 200 orders in its June 2026 schedule. Pricing and eligibility can change; check the current quote and how orders, returns and transactions count. Avalara pricing depends on the products, jurisdictions, filing services and agreement. A generic per-state number is not a reliable basis for a total-cost comparison.
Calculate your actual year-one cost including implementation, account setup, provider subscription, filing services, additional connectors, exceptions, and ongoing reconciliation. A cheaper license with costly manual cleanup can become the more expensive option.
A 10-case Shopify QA checklist
- Taxable product shipped to a standard U.S. address.
- Product with a distinct tax classification.
- Tax-exempt wholesale customer.
- Mixed taxable and non-taxable cart.
- Discount applied across multiple lines.
- Shipping and handling charges.
- Full refund and partial refund.
- Order edited after placement.
- Marketplace order already taxed by another party.
- ERP reconciliation and month-end reporting.
For each scenario, store the expected outcome, the actual order-level tax, the data exported to the provider and the downstream accounting entry. Sign-off should come from both engineering and the merchant's tax or accounting team.
When should you bring in Shopify engineering?
Consider dedicated implementation help when you have a custom ERP, multiple storefronts, B2B exemptions, legacy order data or unexplained mismatches between checkout and reporting. Shugert's role is to design and test reliable commerce integrations—not to determine where your company must register or provide tax advice.
