E-commerce Replatforming Statistics 2027: Who Is Moving to Shopify and From Where
Verified platform switching data: Shopify gained 28,221 stores in 90 days, WooCommerce lost 40,729, plus net flows from Magento and BigCommerce and why brands migrate.

Last updated: November 6, 2026. Platform switching data covers the 90 days before Store Leads' October 30, 2026 update.
Replatforming is a revenue decision, not an IT project
Tens of thousands of stores change platforms every quarter. Most of them do it for the same reasons: the current platform costs too much to maintain, it is too slow, or the team cannot ship changes fast enough to keep up with marketing. The risk is real too. A migration done without a URL map, redirects and data validation can erase years of organic rankings in a week. The figures below show where stores are moving and why, and the rest of the page explains how to make the move without paying for it in lost traffic.

WooCommerce's largest single destination was SureCart (14,492 stores), followed by custom carts (12,502) and Shopify (9,411).
What this means for your store: When a quarter of the stores leaving Magento choose Shopify, and more than half of those leaving BigCommerce do the same, the market has already voted. The open question for a brand is timing: migrating on your schedule is cheaper than migrating after an end-of-life deadline or a failed upgrade.
Why brands replatform: the performance gap
Speed is one of the clearest measurable differences between platforms. In the HTTP Archive's 2025 sample, 76% of mobile Shopify origins passed all Core Web Vitals, against 35% of WooCommerce and 35% of Magento origins. Largest Contentful Paint was good on 86% of mobile Shopify origins, 52% of Magento and 39% of WooCommerce. Source: HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2025, Ecommerce chapter.
What this means for your store: Performance is the most measurable reason to move. A faster store improves conversion on paid traffic you already buy, so the gain starts on launch day instead of waiting for SEO.
Replatforming in practice: timelines from our own projects
- A UK pet supplies retailer moved from Magento to Shopify Plus in 8 weeks with 10,000+ SKUs and zero downtime. Petwell case study.
- A Mexican tire retailer moved 8,000+ SKUs from a legacy hosted platform to Shopify in under 7.5 weeks and kept more than 90% of organic traffic from the first week. Llantas Cavazos case study.
- A U.S. clinic moved from Squarespace to Shopify in a 4 to 6 week scope, including component-level inventory and Shopify POS. MP Health case study.
Signs your store is due for a replatform
Most brands do not migrate because a chart told them to. They migrate when the cost of staying becomes visible in the P&L. The pattern we see in brands doing $500K or more a year is consistent: the development budget goes to keeping the site running instead of growing it, every plugin or extension update is a small risk to checkout, mobile pages fail Core Web Vitals and the team cannot say why, and marketing waits weeks for a landing page that should take a day. If two or more of those describe your store, the question is no longer whether to move but how to move without losing revenue or rankings.
How to migrate without losing traffic
Every migration we run follows the same order. First, a full crawl and URL map of the current store, so every product, collection, page and blog post has a destination. Second, data mapping and test imports for products, variants, customers and order history. Third, the build, with structured data, internal links and tracking in place before launch, not after. Fourth, 301 redirects tested against the crawl before DNS changes. Fifth, Search Console and analytics monitoring after launch to catch and fix any gap in days instead of months. The steps are not complicated. Skipping any of them is what turns a migration into a traffic loss.

Frequently asked questions
Will I lose SEO traffic if I migrate to Shopify?
Traffic loss in a migration comes from missing redirects, changed URLs without a map, lost structured data and broken internal links, not from Shopify itself. With a complete URL map, 301 redirects tested before launch and Search Console monitoring after it, a migration can keep the large majority of organic traffic, as the Llantas Cavazos project did.
How long does a Shopify migration take?
For the stores we work with, typical scopes run from 4 to 8 weeks depending on catalog size, integrations and custom functionality. Data volume matters less than the number of systems that have to keep talking to the store, such as ERP, inventory, POS and subscriptions.
Is Shopify or Shopify Plus right for my brand?
Plus makes sense when you need checkout customization, B2B, multiple expansion stores or higher API limits. Many brands under that threshold run well on standard Shopify plans. We decide this during scoping based on your requirements, not on revenue alone.
Methodology and how to cite this page
Every figure on this page comes from the public source linked next to it, checked on November 6, 2026. Store counts from Store Leads measure live, detected storefronts, not merchant accounts, so they differ from figures Shopify reports. W3Techs percentages describe the share of websites, not revenue. Percentages marked "calculated" are Shugert calculations from the cited raw numbers. Store Leads platform switching counts track stores detected on one platform and later on another within its 90-day window. We update this page every quarter. If you use these statistics, please cite and link to this page as the source of the compilation.
