Organic traffic is getting harder to earn and easier to lose
AI Overviews now answer many queries before a shopper clicks, and the click-through rate for the top result has dropped sharply. At the same time, almost all pages on the web get no organic traffic at all. For an e-commerce brand, that combination means two things. The rankings you already have are worth more than ever, because they are harder to replace. And anything that puts them at risk, such as a migration without redirects, a slow theme or thin category pages, costs more than it used to. The statistics below show the size of the shift and what to do about it.

What this means for your store: If your traffic fell while rankings held, AI Overviews are a likely cause. The response is not to chase position one harder, but to win the queries where shoppers still click: product, category and comparison searches with clear purchase intent, supported by structured data that AI systems can read and cite.

What this means for your store: Publishing more pages rarely fixes organic traffic. Strengthening the pages that already earn rankings, especially collections and top products, usually returns more revenue per hour of work.

What this means for e-commerce teams
Informational queries are losing clicks to AI summaries, so the organic traffic that remains is concentrated on commercial and product-led searches where speed, structured data and clean collection architecture decide who ranks. Platform performance sets the baseline: a store that fails Core Web Vitals on mobile starts every ranking battle behind.
Where migrations put SEO at risk
A replatform is the single moment when an e-commerce brand is most likely to lose organic traffic. URL structures change, redirects get missed, structured data disappears and internal links break. Because rankings are now harder to rebuild, protecting them during a migration is worth planning for from day one. In our Llantas Cavazos migration, more than 90% of organic traffic held from the first week because the URL map and redirects were tested before launch. See the full playbook in our replatforming statistics page.

Frequently asked questions
Do AI Overviews affect e-commerce stores?
Yes, mostly on informational queries. Transactional queries such as product and category searches are less affected, which is why category page quality and product structured data matter more now.
Does Shopify hurt SEO?
No. Shopify handles crawlability, sitemaps and speed well. Most Shopify SEO problems come from duplicate collection URLs, thin category content, missing structured data and app scripts that slow the page.
Will a migration hurt my rankings?
Only if redirects, URL mapping and structured data are not handled. With those in place, rankings usually hold through launch.
Methodology and how to cite this page
Every figure on this page comes from the public source linked next to it, checked on November 6, 2026. Store counts from Store Leads measure live, detected storefronts, not merchant accounts, so they differ from figures Shopify reports. W3Techs percentages describe the share of websites, not revenue. Percentages marked "calculated" are Shugert calculations from the cited raw numbers. We update this page every quarter. Protect your rankings
Most organic losses we see come from migrations and theme changes done without an SEO plan. See our Shopify SEO work or request a technical SEO review.
